GOLD Coast will have co-captains for the 2019 AFL season with David Swallow and Jarrod Witts named as the club’s new leaders.
Swallow, is an inaugural Suns player after being the No.1 pick in the 2010 draft, while Witts has been with the Suns for the past three years after he joined them from Collingwood at the end of the 2016 season.
The pair take over the leadership after last year’s co-captains Steven May and Tom Lynch both left the club at the end of last season.
“Over the last period of my time at the football club, they’ve shown exactly what it takes to be captains,” Suns coach Stuart Dew said of Swallow and Witts.
“They should be honoured. I know they’re humbled.
“Dave’s been here for the whole time and when he committed long-term for the rest of his career, I think that shows the type of person he is.
“He’s up for the challenge and certainly looking to lead this whole football club.
“Jarrod’s been here three years and obviously the same. Through the tough times through the end of last year Wittsy knocked on the door and said ‘OK, I’m in and how do we get it better’ … from that moment there I knew Jarrod had the club at heart and was committed to making sure we start our climb.”
The Suns will also have two vice-captains in 2019, with Irishman Pearce Hanley and youngster Touk Miller named in those roles.
Jarrod Harbrow is joined by Brayden Fiorini, George Horlin-Smith and Alex Sexton in the remainder of the Suns’ leadership group.
