JOEL Selwood will go close to becoming the longest-serving captain in VFL/AFL history this year following confirmation at tonight’s Geelong season launch that he will lead the club for a 10th season.
Selwood is one of only six men to have captained their club on 200 occasions, a mark he reached in last year’s grand final.
He sits only behind Stephen Kernahan (226 games as captain), Dick Reynolds (224), Nick Riewoldt (220), Ted Whitten (212) and Michael Voss (210).
If Selwood was to play every game this year, and the Cats featured in every week of the finals, he would draw level with Kernahan on grand final day.
There has been no change to Geelong’s leadership group from 2020, with Selwood joined by co-vice-captains Patrick Dangerfield and Mark Blicavs, Mitch Duncan, Mark O’Connor, Tom Stewart and Zach Tuohy.
“We have an exceptional group of leaders at the club,” football boss Simon Lloyd said.
“The PLG takes a broad club-wide view, and that is a hallmark of the group. Joel is an experienced and inspirational captain, and the support he receives from his fellow leaders and the wider playing group has allowed us to develop a culture that has endured and thrived.
“This group led us so well during the difficult 2020 season. They have endured, thrived, yet strive to get better and build their capabilities.
