GEELONG is hoping for the best but fearing the worst after Olivia Barber suffered a knee injury in the VFLW loss to Carlton at Ikon Park.
The AFLW-listed forward is set to undergo scans early this week, with concerns she has suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.
“Liv got taken down in a tackle in the second quarter and came off with soreness through her knee and leg,” coach Andrew Bruce.
“She’ll have some scans, and we’ll see what it is.
“We’re hoping for the best, but we’ll just have to wait and see.”
Drafted with pick no.21 in last year’s draft from the Murray Bushrangers, Barber played seven AFLW games for the Cats.
The 2019 All-Australian had kicked ten goals from her previous four games before Saturday’s injury.
Barber’s injury capped a disappointing day for Geelong, which had its grip on a top-two finish loosened by the nine-point loss to the Blues.
The Cats are now only percentage clear of third-placed Port Melbourne with two rounds to play.
“Carlton were very good with the game style they played,” Bruce told Bay 93.9′ The Sideline View.
“We weren’t at our best. We certainly could learn to use the ball a lot better, and with our ball movement, we just didn’t take some opportunities that we should have.”
Georgia Clarke was the Cats’ only multiple goalkicker with two. VFLW-listed duo Paige Sheppard and Claudia Gunjaca further enhanced both their AFLW draft and club best-and-fairest prospects with impressive performances.
Geelong will meet the undefeated Collingwood at Victoria Park next Saturday.
