Forgotten defender Jed Bews is a chance to make his first AFL appearance of the season in tomorrow (Friday) night’s meeting with Collingwood at the MCG.

The 30-year-old premiership player hasn’t featured at the top level since last year’s final round, sitting stagnant on 166 games.

However, after being named an emergency for last Saturday’s win over Hawthorn and held out of the following day’s VFL loss to Box Hill, coach Chris Scott confirmed Bews was a chance to take on the Magpies.

With Collingwood set to name small forward Jamie Elliott, Bews looms as an ideal match-up.

“Bewsy was very close to playing last week,” Scott said.

“And with the five-day break, we held him back (from playing VFL) with the probability he would come into our 22 this week.

“We’re working through a few things. But… if he doesn’t play, he’s perilously close.”

Geelong is also weighing up whether Mitch Knevitt will make an immediate return after he was a late withdrawal due to illness last week.

It was unfortunate timing for the Grovedale product, who impressed with 13 disposals, eight marks and a goal in the previous round’s win over Essendon.

“Logic would tell you that he’s recovered, and he trained really well, that he would come straight back in,” Scott said.

“But, it’s just not as simple as that for us right at the moment.

“We’re genuinely, even though it’s 24 hours-plus out from the game, we’ve still got a few balls in the air that we need to work through.

“I wouldn’t like to give you an indication before we’ve had our final meeting with our coaches.

“Look, put it this way – if Mitch didn’t play, he’d be stiff.”

Meanwhile, Scott says Geelong is getting closer to providing an update on the extent of a foot problem that has sidelined big man Toby Conway.

“There’s going to be one coming, I suspect, this week,” he said. “I can’t give it now, but we think it’s getting closer.

“It’s a bit of a complicated one, which is why it’s taken so long.”
