Cameron: ‘Little tweaks’ needed for premiership defence

GEELONG won’t be getting complacent despite a stellar premiership season, with leading goalkicker Jeremy Cameron saying the team’s been working on ‘little tweaks’ this off-season to stay one step ahead of the competition.

The Cats landed in Warrnambool on Monday for a two-day community camp, and Cameron said the 2022 premiership is now in the back of the mind, with a Friday night blockbuster against Collingwood to open the season less than six weeks away.

“The guys have come back really well, and we’re looking forward to building up with a bit of match play from here on in and really building to Round 1,” he said.

“It’s definitely back to business, you start at square one again, and every team is after the ultimate success, so everyone is back on a level playing field.

“I’d say getting the balance right is key, and I think we’ve done really well.”

Cameron said the side has been working to stay one step ahead of the competition, with Geelong looking to achieve back-to-back premierships for the first time since 1951-52.

“I think there’ll be just little tweaks on the way,” he said.

“We won’t change anything too extreme, we won’t make massive changes, but there’s definitely ways we can get better.

“The personnel might be different; there’s so many different things you can look at.

“It’s about just tweaking things, and the rest of the competition probably has an eye on what we did last year.”

Meanwhile, with the season opener against the Magpies set for March 17, Cameron said with partner Indi expecting their first child sometime around that time, he very well might be a late withdrawal.

“The baby is due either Round 1, 2, or 3,” he said.

“It’s a very exciting time, so it’s (missing a game) definitely a big possibility.

“I’ve always been really clear that that’ll come first, and if that’s the case, I’ll be staying with her, that’s for sure.”
