Cameron not getting caught up in ton talk

Geelong star Jeremy Cameron with Cats AFLW player Kate Darby and representatives and players from the Northern Stars.

Jeremy Cameron understands the interest.

As a teenager, he found himself barracking for Lance Franklin and Brendan Fevola to achieve what is now a rare football milestone.

However, the Geelong star is content for the discussion around his chase for a century of goals in a season to remain external.

After his career-best 11-goal haul against North Melbourne last Saturday night, Cameron has 69 goals.

With four home-and-away rounds and likely a minimum of two finals, the 32-year-old has put himself in the frame.

“I remember when I was a kid watching ‘Buddy’ kick 100 and ‘Fev’ finishing on 99 all those years ago,” Cameron said.

“It’s exciting for the game, but it’s not something I put too much time and energy into.

“It’s the chase for another flag that I’m more interested in, and not so much the individual success.”

Geelong sits fourth on the ladder with four winnable matches to come, starting with Port Adelaide at GMHBA Stadium this Sunday.

Cameron knows it’s clichéd, but the Cats aren’t looking too far beyond August.

“We’re first to acknowledge that we haven’t played our best football at times this year,” he said.

“We’ve been up and down. Yeah, we’ve gone on a couple of nice runs… maybe five or six games and then dropped another one, and haven’t played well against some quality opposition at times.

“There’s always room for improvement, and we want to be playing our best footy this time of year.

“I think it’s really important in the build-up to what could be after that. But, honestly, we haven’t really looked too much further than the next week.

“And probably the furthest you look forward is the next four weeks. So, it’s an important month to get that right, regardless of who you’re playing.

“We saw one awesome result on the weekend (St Kilda’s comeback over Melbourne), and it just goes to show, if you switch off for a little period in time, then you can get chased down pretty quickly.”

Cameron joined AFLW player Kate Darby in presenting a $5000 cheque to junior club Northern Stars to assist with the introduction of an under-nine girls team.

Cameron’s teammates Lawson Humphries, Oisin Mullin, and Max Holmes also visited the Stars’ Shell Reserve base in Corio last night as part of Geelong players heading to clubs across the region.

“It’s nice to get out here… but out to other junior clubs right across the region as well; it’s important to do that,” he said.

“We love mingling with the kids, and they teach us a few things as well.”
