Cats add another SANFL Eagle

June 1, 2022 8:00 pm in by

EIGHT months after throwing Tyson Stengle an AFL lifeline, Geelong will welcome another small forward from SANFL club Woodville-West Torrens.

The Cats have used their lone selection in the mid-season draft to select 20-year-old Zane Williams.

The 183cm Williams has kicked 15 goals from eight games for the Eagles to start the SANFL season, where he is a teammate of former Geelong forward Dan Menzel, after 11 goals in 10 games in 2021.

His performances earnt him selection in the South Australian state team that play Western Australia last month.

“Zane’s had a really good year for Woodville-West Torrens as a small forward/midfielder-type,” Cats recruiting boss Stephen Wells told krockfootball.com.au.

“He’s been a consistent player in their senior team this year and was rewarded with the selection in the SANFL team to play against the WAFL in recent weeks.

“He’s come through their program, been captain of their junior teams, and doing a really good job this year as a 20-year-old.”

Wells revealed he spoke with Stengle today (Wednesday) about Geelong’s interest in Williams.

“Tyson spoke very highly of Zane,” Wells said.

“It wasn’t the thing that got Zane over the line; it was his performances on the field that got him drafted.

“But, it was great to know he had a good endorsement from a former teammate.”

Wells believes Williams arrives at Geelong ready to play AFL.

“He’s been playing senior football in South Australia all year, so, yes, he’s ready to go,” Wells said.

“He’ll get across here and familiarise himself with the place and fight for a spot in our senior team like everyone else on our list.”

Williams is only guaranteed a spot on Geelong’s rookie list until the end of the season.

“But, we’re hopeful he’s got a bright future for a long time here.”
