Geelong has turned to former Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley to fill its vacant assistant coach position.

Buckley, who played 280 AFL games with the Brisbane Bears and the Magpies, coached Collingwood on 218 occasions from 2012 until mid-2021, taking the club to the 2018 grand final.

The 53-year-old has since been a prominent member of the media.

Buckley will slip into the role vacated by Steven King’s departure for the Melbourne coaching job.

“We are excited to add Nathan to our club and, more specifically, to our coaching group,” Cats football boss Andrew Mackie said.

“He is respected and highly regarded across the football industry and brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective.

“In speaking with Nathan, it was clear he had a strong appetite to return to coaching, and we look forward to welcoming him to our football program to work closely with our players and staff.”
