Geelong has delisted two-time best-and-fairest Cam Guthrie in the first of its post-trade period list decisions.
The Cats have decided against offering the 33-year-old a contract for next year after three injury-interrupted seasons in which he managed just ten games after winning the second of his Carji Greeves medals as the club claimed the 2022 premiership.
Drafted with pick 23 in the 2010 National Draft from the Calder Cannons, the Sunbury product debuted in Round 1 of the 2011 season after being handed the No.29 jumper vacated by Gary Ablett following his defection to the Gold Coast.
Guthrie played the following week against Fremantle but was omitted after being subbed out of the contest and didn’t appear again at AFL level that season.
However, he became a regular member of the Geelong team in 2012, playing 18 home-and-away games, but missed out on the elimination final loss to Fremantle.
From 2013 to 2022, he played at least 20 games every season, bar 2018, when he suffered a syndesmosis injury that cost him ten matches on the sidelines.
He won his first Carji Greeves Medal in 2020 as the Cats reached their first grand final in nine years before fading after half-time to lose to Richmond.
However, Guthrie got his well-deserved premiership medal in 2022, as Geelong swept aside Sydney.
Unfortunately, his 2023 season was over following the Round 6 win over Sydney due to a foot issue, before suffering a quad injury in the opening moments of the first practice match against Carlton the following year that sidelined him until Round 7.
Guthrie managed four consecutive games on his return in Round 7 before the Achilles issue first flared.
He returned for Geelong’s VFL semi-final loss to Southport but could not force his way into the AFL preliminary final line-up.
Guthrie’s 2025 was impacted by Achilles and calf concerns, restricting him to four VFL matches.
“Cam has been an outstanding and dedicated servant of the Geelong Football Club, both on and off the field,” Mackie said.
“He has been ultra-consistent and had the special ability to elevate his game in key moments and times of success, particularly throughout our 2022 premiership campaign.
“Cam will always be a great Geelong person, with his influence extending well beyond what he achieved on the field.”
Guthrie’s departure leaves five players for the Cats to make a public call on: fellow veteran Jed Bews, 2025 debutants George Stevens and Oli Wiltshire, and rookie duo Joe Pike and Ted Clohesy.
