GEELONG VFLW coach Andrew Bruce concedes his team was left feeling “pretty flat” at the news the grand final would be delayed by at least a week.

The Cats were due to meet Collingwood in the 2021 decider at Port Melbourne today (Sunday) before Victoria’s latest COVID-19 lockdown forced a stop to community sport across the state.

“On Thursday night, there was no doubt the group was pretty flat, and justifiably so, I think, compared to other times when we’ve all gone into lockdown and footy’s stopped,” Bruce told Bay 93.9’s The Sideline View.

“With the buildup that had already been, and we knew there was only a couple of days to go, it was certainly pretty flat. But, we’ve tried to get around each other.

“We just wait now and see when we might get to play it.”

Lockdown in Victoria is scheduled to finish on Thursday night; however, Bruce is unsure whether the grand final will automatically be played next Sunday.

“There are certainly some different things that have been thrown around by the AFL,” he said.

“All we know is that they are really committed to finishing the season, which is great and gives that little bit of a carrot for the girls to keep on trying to keep themselves right.

“So much depends on what happens in and around the community with COVID.

“We’ll just have to wait and see.”

Bruce is confident Geelong would give a good account of itself even if preparation time is minimal.

“If they said it’s whatever day and we only had a day to prepare, we’d be confident we’d be able to turn up and have a really good crack at it,” he said.

“The girls have been fantastic all year. We’ve had things where we’ve had to come back from at different times.

“But they always just have a magnificent attitude, and I don’t expect that that will change come grand final day.”
