Cats strengthen Irish link

Geelong has increased to four the number of Irish players on its AFLW list with the signing of dual-sport star Kate Kenny,

The Cats confirmed the signing of Kenny this morning (Wednesday), putting in place the final piece of their list puzzle for the 2024 season.

The 22-year-old Offaly product plays Gaelic Football and Camogie (a stick-and-ball game similar to Hurling) at club and university levels.

A forward, Kenny is the fourth Irishwoman on Geelong’s list, joining DCU Dóchas Éireann teammate Anna-Rose Kennedy, and Rachel Kearns and Aishling Moloney.

“Kate has been a standout athlete in both Gaelic Football and Camogie, and we’ve had our eye on her for some time. We’re thrilled to be able to bring an athlete of her calibre to GMHBA Stadium,” assistant football boss Brett Johnson said.

“Her prowess in multiple sports speaks volumes about her abilities, and we’re eager to witness her seamless transition into AFLW.

“With Kate’s signing, we have finalised our list for 2024, and we look forward to welcoming the squad back for pre-season in June to build on a successful 2023 season.”

Kenny joins former Brisbane Lions Bella Smith and draftees Chantal Mason and Bryde O’Rourke as additions to the Geelong list.

They replace the retired Renee Garing and delisted trio Mia Skinner, Ingrid Houtsma and Sammy Gooden.

Pre-season training commences in early June, with the season to start on the last weekend of August.
