Geelong speedster Max Holmes admits the memories of the hamstring injury that caused him to miss the club’s 2022 grand final victory entered his mind when he started to struggle during the third quarter of the preliminary final loss to the Brisbane Lions.

Holmes had been the dominant player on the ground and created the turnover that led to the Patrick Dangerfield goal that gave Geelong a game-high 25-point lead.

However, minutes later, he was on the bench being worked on by medical staff and in discussions with the coaching staff.

Holmes returned to the field before the call was made to sub him out early in the final term.

“My hammy… it was the element of a lot of things in the end,” Holmes told K rock’s Tom, Lingy & Loggy.

“I was crook leading up to the game, and there was a bit of weird thoughts in my head from the previous prelim.

“In the end, I just thought at that stage, ‘fresh legs is got to be better than what I’m serving up right now’, so I went off.”
