Eighteen-year-old Mitch Duncan admits that AFL life membership was the furthest thing from his mind when Geelong recruiting guru Stephen Wells called out his name at the 2009 National Draft.
Starting his adult life on the other side of the country was more pressing for the West Australian, who the Cats selected with pick 28 just two months after winning that year’s flag.
However, as another milestone in an impressive career approaches, Duncan has been able to reflect on his journey briefly.
“I’m proud of the work that’s been put in,” he said. “I’m very grateful to land at a club that I did.
“It’s obviously a lot of hard work, and I thank the people around me to help me get there.
“My support network; my immediate family, to external people, all coaches, and all teammates as well.
“It’s a great little milestone to tick off. But, hopefully, there’s still a few more.”
CATS: PRE-SEASON OPTMISIM VINDICATED
With Sunday’s clash against North Melbourne his 278th in the Hoops, to go with 22 pre-season games, becoming just the seventh Cat to 300 VFL/AFL games is a realistic proposition for Duncan.
However, that would require him to play in 2025, which is yet to be discussed.
“To be honest, I’m just trying to really enjoy this year, first and foremost, and I think the rest will take care of itself,” Duncan said.
“I just look forward to running out there each week for the Geelong footy club and giving my best.
“We’ll be in communication with the footy club in due time and just see where that lands.
“I still think my footy’s capable at the level at this stage.”
Duncan will be joined in qualifying for life membership by Zach Tuohy if the Irishman lines up against North Melbourne.
Tuohy’s 274th AFL game brings him to 300 matches under the AFL banner, including 19 pre-season games, six International Rules appearances for Ireland, and selection for the All-Stars in the 2020 Bushfire Relief match.
