Gun Geelong midfielder Cam Guthrie has been given the green light to return to action after two months on the sidelines with a quad injury.

The two-time Carji Greeves medallist has been sidelined since suffering the injury with the first kick of the practice match against Carlton at Princes Park on February 21.

However, the Cats haven’t indicated yet whether it will be in the blockbuster AFL clash with Carlton or via the VFL, also against the Blues, and, ironically, at Princes Park.

“Cam hasn’t missed a beat with his rehab the whole way through,” assistant football boss Brett Johnson said.

“These last couple of weeks have been more about giving him that specific football conditioning at training in readiness to play, so it’s pleasing to have Cam available to play football this weekend.”

Geelong will have to make at least one change to the team that kept its perfect start to the season intact with a 26-point win over the Brisbane Lions.

Vice-captain Tom Stewart has entered the 12-day concussion protocol after a collision with Lion Kai Lohmann.

He’s been joined by second-year forward Phoenix Foster following an incident during the Cats’ VFL victory against the Lions.

“We’ll assess each day how both players are tracking, and we’ll know more as they progress through the protocols around availability to play in the coming weeks,” Johnson said.

“We’ll ensure Phoenix and Tom are well looked after.”

Johnson also confirmed an adjustment to the returns of draftee Mitch Edwards (back) and Category B rookie Joe Furphy (ankle).

“There’s been no setbacks; it’s more about getting the appropriate training loads into them so we can set them up to perform really well when they play,” Johnson said.
