TAMARA Smith has become the second Geelong VFLW star to sign with an AFLW expansion club after joining Hawthorn.
Smith, who turned 22 last Sunday, joins Paige Sheppard (Sydney) in getting a well-deserved AFLW opportunity.
Last month, both were named to an All-Stars game featuring some of the best non-AFLW talent from Victoria, Tasmania, and the Northern Territory.
After six games with Richmond’s VFLW team across 2018-19, Smith has made 28 appearances for the Cats.
“Tamara Smith has been a valuable contributor to our VFLW program over the past few seasons and has set the standard for intensity at the contest,” Geelong AFLW boss Brett Johnson said.
“Tamara’s hard work has paid off with her now receiving this well-deserved opportunity at AFLW level.
“We wish her well as she continues her football journey at Hawthorn.”
AFLW: TAYLOR CALLS TIME, CATS AXE THREE
The timing of Smith’s signing is unfortunate for Geelong.
With AFLW pre-season training starting on Monday, Smith won’t be available for the Cats’ elimination final clash with the Southern Saints at Deakin Uni on Saturday.
