Lawson Humphries is adamant he was “playing the formation” when he found himself 20m out from goal during the third quarter of Geelong’s 76-point hiding of Yartapuulti at Adelaide Oval.

The emerging half-back received a handpass from Bailey Smith and snapped truly for what was just the second goal of his career, which now sits at 20 matches.

“It was nice to get up there,” Humphries said.

“I feel like every week I’m trying to get there, and usually Zach Guthrie’s not giving me the ball or something, and I get into him when we get back to the back line.

“It was cool to get on the end of one.”

Adding to the moment was Humphries instinctively grabbing at his Sir Doug Nicholls Round guernsey – Saltwater Stories – designed by his sister Meeza, and displaying the design to the crowd.

“(There were) a lot of conversations about it throughout the last week and the announcement of it all,” Humphries said.

“I was just really grateful that it all worked out really well and we had a good win because the jumper means a lot to our family and it’s nice to, I guess, give it the respect I felt it deserved.”

For Meeza, seeing more than 12 months of work on display was a proud moment.

“It was a long process, but we worked really hard with the Geelong marketing team, the graphics team, and also a bit of Cotton On, so that was pretty cool,” she said.

“And worked together with lots of the family.

“Last year, I was studying graphic design, so it was pretty cool. I got to use some of the skills I’ve learnt for that to do this.”
