Jake Kolodjashnij is cutting it fine to play a role in Geelong’s premiership quest, with the experienced defender to undergo surgery.
The 29-year-old has been restricted to a lone VFL appearance this year, due to a combination of back and groin concerns.
“Jake will undergo a minor procedure later this week to help manage ongoing groin symptoms,” football boss Andrew Mackie said.
“His current return to play timeline will become clearer once he starts his recovery and begins to increase his training loads.”
Young midfielder Jhye Clark won’t play until after the Cats’ bye after suffering a second concussion within a month in the VFL win over Werribee.
Clark was also concussed in the clash with Port Melbourne on May 17.
“Jhye has entered the AFL’s concussion protocol following an incident in the VFL on Saturday against Werribee,” Mackie said.
“We will know more around his possible return timeline as he progresses through the graded return to play protocol.”
In good news for luckless veteran Cam Guthrie, he is expected to be right to play early next month.
“Cam has commenced back running after experiencing calf tightness in the Round 11 VFL game against Gold Coast Suns,” Mackie said.
“We will use the upcoming bye period to increase his training loads, and we expect him to be available to return against Richmond VFL after our bye.”
Meanwhile, uncapped big man Mitch Edwards is a test to make play his VFL match of the season in Geelong’s VFL clash with Brisbane on Saturday morning.
On Monday, the Cats confirmed key defender Sam De Koning would undergo surgery on an AC joint injury suffered in the 95-point win over Essendon at the MCG on Saturday.
