Lack of energy hurts Cats

GEELONG is running out of chances to avoid a first AFLW wooden spoon after being dispatched by 39 points by West Coast in Perth on Monday afternoon.

The Cats were no match for the Eagles, who came into the Round 7 match at Lathlain Park with just one win to their name.

“We thought we would be able to put up a better fight today than that,” coach Paul Hood said.

“We just really struggled to play with the energy we like for long periods.

“And that’s the disappointing part because our energy was terrific last week.

“Yeah, a step backwards, but we’ve got some things to address, and we’ll work hard on trying to fix them.”

Geelong arrived in Perth late on Sunday night after the AFL pushed back the match 24 hours last week to ensure the Cats met Western Australia’s border requirements.

However, Hood refused to use their preparation as an excuse.

“We’d normally fly into WA the day before a game – that’s standard practice,” he said.

“And the fact that it’s a day later (than originally fixtured), if anything, it should have given us a bit more energy from last week.

“So, no, that’s not something we can hide behind – we just played poorly.”

Georgie Rankin was helped from the field late in the contest by medical staff after being on the end of a solid bump from Eagles captain Emma Swanson.

However, Hood says other than a sore elbow, Rankin should be OK.

The Cats final home match of the season will come off a five-day break against the GWS Giants on Saturday.

If they can’t beat the Giants, they would need a win over fellow winless team Gold Coast in Round 9 to climb off the bottom of the ladder.
