GEELONG VFLW coach Andrew Bruce wouldn’t be surprised if Theresia Meissner is garnering interest from AFLW clubs following another impressive performance in the Cats’ two-point win over the Casey Demons.
The German defender stood tall as Geelong held off the fast-finishing Demons to claim its fourth win of the season and consolidate third spot on the ladder.
“We really love what she does for us,” Bruce said. “For someone who has only played (Australian Rules) football in Europe, it’s amazing the level she is at.
“She’s an elite kick of the footy. She does all our kick out duties, generally kicks the ball about 40m, and it’s rare that it doesn’t hit somebody on the chest.
“And her opponent control with her body positioning is absolutely fantastic.
“I really hope she gets an opportunity at the next level next year.”
Geelong held a 15-point leading at three-quarter time at Casey Fields, and the Cats were able to keep their noses in front despite being held scoreless in the final term.
“There were some very nervous moments,” Bruce said.
“Casey started to play some good footy, and they had inside 50 after inside 50 and got a couple of goals.
“It tightened right up.”
As well as Meissner, Tahlia Tatlock also impressed in defence, AFLW-listed youngster Darcy Moloney worked hard in the midfield, and ruck Olivia Fuller continued her solid start to 2021.
“Olivia probably did 70 per cent of our ruck work, against good opposition, and tried her heart out all day,” Bruce said.
“She gave our mids first use quite a lot of the time, which was great.”
Geelong reaches the halfway mark of the season when it meets North Melbourne at Queen’s Park in Highton next Sunday morning.
