Rising star named VFL Cats’ best

YOUNG midfielder Jye Chalcraft has been rewarded for a consistent season in the Geelong midfielder by winning the Cats’ VFL best-and-fairest tonight (Thursday).

In his second season with the Cats, the Shepparton product polled 162 votes, finishing 20 clear of co-captains Matt Ling and Jackson McLachlan on 142.

First-year defender Ben Lloyd (129 votes) and the experienced Dan Capiron (125) rounded out the top five.

After making seven appearances in the Covid-shortened 2011 season after moving to Geelong, Chalcraft played 17 of a possible 18 matches this year.

He averaged 22.6 disposals per game, with a season-high 36 possessions in the Round 14 loss to Richmond at GMHBA Stadium.

Under Geelong’s voting system, each player was given a score between 1-15 from the coaching staff based on their performance.
