GEELONG has been left to rue an inability to make the most of its chances in front of goal as it exited the VFLW premiership race.
The Cats could only manage 1.6 kicking with the aid of the breeze in the first quarter of their elimination final clash with Southern Saints at Deakin Uni.
It would prove costly, with Geelong suffering an eight-point loss, 4.2 (26) to 2.6 (18).
“I think it certainly had a bearing on the result,” Cats coach Andrew Bruce told Bay 93.9’s The Sideline view.
“Seven scoring shots and only get(ting) a goal out of it was a little disappointing.
“The Saints probably didn’t have that many scoring shots when they had the breeze either.
“So, we certainly had our chances, and we just couldn’t quite get it through.”
Despite the season’s premature end, Bruce said the club was proud of what the VFLW program had achieved in 2022.
“They’ve had some challenges in recent weeks with player availability,” he said.
“We had six NAB League girls play in our team today, which is brilliant for us.
“The fact that we had 46 players through the whole season – so there’d been a lot of changes – but our system remained the same.
“And more so, you have your wins and losses, but it’s important to keep going, and hopefully, we’ve given them a base to build on with their football and to have a crack at it next year for those who don’t get drafted.”
Carley Remmos put her AFLW delisting behind her to finish 21 disposals, seven clearances and five tackles.
Geelong Falcons captain Charlotte Simpson finished with 18 disposals and defender Chloe Leonard 16.
Chloe Scheer, one of only three 2022 AFLW-listed players, had 15 disposals and eight clearances.
