Toby Conway’s season is over after being booked in for surgery on a foot injury that has sidelined the young Geelong ruck for the past month.

Scans have revealed a stress fracture in his navicular bone, with the Cats expecting the 21-year-old to be ready for the start of the 2025 pre-season.

“Toby’s situation is unfortunate; he has displayed promising development this year in both the AFL and VFL,” assistant football boss Brett Johnson said.

“Our approach will be conservative, allowing sufficient time for his foot to heal properly.

“We anticipate Toby will make a strong return in 2025.”

It’s not the first time Conway has battled a foot issue.

He didn’t play until late in the 2023 season before returning to make his AFL debut in the final-round loss to the Western Bulldogs.

The 2021 draftee made five appearances this year, including stringing together three consecutive games between rounds 11-13.

Geelong has also put a timeframe on Cam Gutherie’s return.

The veteran midfielder is listed as being three weeks away with an Achilles tendon issue that has kept him sidelined since the loss to the Gold Coast in Round 11.

“We have continued to monitor Cam’s recovery from the Achilles flare-up, and, all going well, he will continue to build up his training loads, and we expect to see him back available for selection in a few weeks’ time,” Johnson said.

Forward Tom Hawkins is between three and five weeks away from a lisfranc concern suffered in the loss to Carlton in Round 15.

However, midfielder Tanner Bruhn could return from a fractured scaphoid for Saturday night’s meeting with the Western Bulldogs at GMHBA Stadium.

Bruhn suffered the injury at training before the loss to the Blues.

“Tanner has been making good progress throughout his rehab,” Johnson said.

“We will continue to assess him ahead of team selection on Thursday.”

Emerging forward Shannon Neale has been cleared of any damage following a knock to the throat during the win over Collingwood.

“Shannon was assessed after Friday night’s game and was cleared of any damage,” Johnson said.”
