Geelong faces the prospect of being without Tyson Stengle for the beginning of the AFL season after granting the star small forward additional leave.

Multiple reports say the 27-year-old is dealing with a personal situation just over seven weeks out from the club’s Opening Round clash with the Gold Coast on Friday, March 6.

In a statement, the Cats say they expect Stengle back at training in the “short-term”.

“Tyson’s welfare is our priority and, with the support of the Club, he’ll be given the time he needs before returning to training,” football boss Andrew Mackie said.

After stints at Richmond and Adelaide, Stengle was thrown an AFL lifeline by Geelong ahead of the 2022 season.

He rewarded the Cats’ faith by playing every game, kicking 53 goals and earning All-Australian selection.

Stengle, who has kicked 160 goals in 93 games in the Hoops, signed a five-year contract heading into the 2025 season.
