Jed Bews will have to push his case for an AFL recall via the VFL after being squeezed out of the Geelong team for tomorrow (Saturday) night’s Round 1 clash with St Kilda.

The experienced defender was held back until the final AFL quarter of the practice match against Carlton before lining up for the Community Series meeting with Essendon.

Bews played 84 per cent of game time for ten disposals and three marks.

However, the 30-year-old will start his 13th season at the Cats running around at Deakin Uni tomorrow afternoon in a practice match against Sandringham.

“In my view, when he’s at his best, he’s in our best team, and that will happen throughout the year, no doubt,” Geelong AFL coach Chris Scott said.

“It just hasn’t worked out for him this week.

“He’ll be in our team pretty soon.

“As you know – I don’t even need to forecast it – we’re not going to play the same 23 every week.”

Bews will comfortably be the most experienced AFL player lining up for the Cats with 166 games.

He is one of 14 AFL-listed players named to take on the Zebras, along with AFL emergencies Shannon Neale, Oisin Mullin and Brandan Parfitt.

Draftees Connor O’Sullivan, Lawson Humphries and George Stevens are also in the squad.

13 VFL-listed player will press their claims for selection in Geelong’s Round 1 meeting with Werribee at GMHBA Stadium next Saturday.
