THE lifting of restrictions on community sport in metro Melbourne is good news for Geelong’s VFL and VFLW teams, with both to return to action this weekend.

The Cats, who sit seventh on the ladder, host second-placed Footscray at GMHBA Stadium on Friday afternoon.

A curtain-raiser to the AFL clash between Geelong and the Western Bulldogs, the first bounce is at 4:10pm.

The second-placed VFLW Cats will travel to Box Hill City Oval for a meeting with Hawthorn, with the season to resume where it was stopped at Round 13.

Geelong needs to win its final two home-and-away matches to ensure the double-chance, with Port Melbourne only percentage behind in third spot.

Fans will be able to attend the Geelong-Footscray match-up but will be locked out of the Cats’ clash with the Hawks.

“Our VFL and VFLW clubs have been pillars in Victorian football and their local communities for many, many years, and they have been missed over the last month,” the AFL’s Tristan Salter said.

“Football is the heartbeat of many communities across Victoria, and the return of VFL and VFLW football this weekend provides excitement back to these communities who have been through a challenging period.”

“To all footy fans in Victoria, we acknowledge the importance of crowds at footy games, and we will continue to work closely with the Victorian Government on when crowds can return to the VFL and VFLW competitions and get the pulse of footy back again.”
