Geelong has secured the services of hard-nosed Hawthorn midfielder James Worpel on a four-year deal.

A restricted free agent, the Hawks have confirmed they won’t match the move to the Cats of their 2019 best-and-fairest.

“We’re really pleased to welcome James to the Cats,” football boss Andrew Mackie said.

“James is a quality person and player who we believe will complement our current playing group.

“We’re looking forward to seeing him in the hoops in 2026.”

The 26-year-old Bannockburn and Bell Park product co-captained the Geelong Falcons to their most recent Talent League premiership in 2017.

He joined Hawthorn later that year with pick 45 in the National Draft, playing 148 games and kicking 49 goals in brown and gold.

The Hawks will receive an end-of-second-round National Draft selection as compensation.

“As is James’ right as a restricted free agent, he has chosen to seek a new opportunity at Geelong,” Hawthorn recruiting and list manager Mark McKenzie said.

“Playing 148 games for the Hawks, James was always a popular teammate and respected figure at our club.

“On behalf of the club, I’d like to acknowledge James’ amazing contribution to Hawthorn, his professionalism and dedication never wavered during his eight seasons in the brown and gold, giving his all each week.

“We wish him well in his future endeavours.”
