Geelong Mums is reporting a 20 per cent increase on calls for help compared with this time last year (Geelong Mums).

Charity Geelong Mums says over 515 families in the region with newborn or young babies are on a waitlist and struggling this Christmas.

The service is after financial donations to help fill the need for prams, cots or car seats through its Festive Appeal.

On the last day of goods donations before closing for the year, the organisations Julie Roach says they’re struggling to meet the increase number of families in need.

“We’ve seen a 20 per cent increase in requests from families compared to this time last year as we lead up into the Christmas period,” she said.

Ms Roach says despite “fabulous support from the Geelong community”, the reality is there are 99 parents who have no idea where their newborn will sleep when they bring them home.

“We have families who have to make the choice between paying the rent, or buying a box of nappies for their young children,” she said.

“We have families who are just struggling to clothe their children or buy them a pair of shoes.”
