Man charged over alleged drink driving incident

A man has been charged after allegedly crashing into the welcome sign of a Werribee shopping centre while over the limit.

The 46-year-old from Hoppers Crossing then allegedly mounted a footpath and drove into a bus stop, before engaging police in a chase.

“Police indicated for the man to pull over but he turned onto Derrimut Road where he collected a street sign and drove off,” police said in a statement.

“Following a 500m trail of downed street signs instead of breadcrumbs, members ended up in Dunk Ct however the man and his Holden Commodore were nowhere in sight.

“Suddenly a man appeared on the street riding an electric scooter and the keen-eyed police officer was able to identify him as the alleged driver.”

The man was arrested after more street signs were hit – allegedly blowing .149.

He was hit with charges including reckless conduct endanger serious injury and failing to stop after a collision.
