Ocean Grove has become the first Bellarine club in the market for a new coach for 2027.
Following a review of the football program, the Grubbers have told co-coaches Dave Farrell and Nick Bourke they won’t be offered contracts for next year.
Farrell took on the role in 2023, replacing Pete Davey, after a stint with South Barwon on either side of Covid.
Bourke, a former Geelong rookie, joined Farrell in 2024.
“Both Dave and Nick have invested significantly in every one of our players who have been involved in the program,” a statement provided to K rock Football said.
“The care and development provided to each player over the past three and a half seasons has been of the highest level.
“This will continue for the remaining six rounds of the 2026 season as Dave and Nick are committed to finishing the season strongly.
“We acknowledge the significant commitment, passion and professionalism that Dave and Nick have brought to the senior football program and sincerely thank them both for their contribution and dedication to the Grubbers.
“We extend thanks to their program staff and to their respective families, who have supported them and the club considerably during the past four seasons.
“Decisions of this nature are never easy. We ask that everyone respects those involved during this transition period.”
A powerhouse in the 1990s and 2000s, Ocean Grove’s last premiership came in 2003, while their most recent grand final appearance was in 2014.
The Grubbers won an elimination final with a bunch of talented youngsters in 2021 before the season was cut short by another Covid lockdown.
Their highest finish in the past three seasons was eighth in 2023 with five wins. They won four games in 2024 and four last year, claiming the club’s first wooden spoon since 1971, the first year of the Bellarine league’s existence.
Ocean Grove currently sits 10th with a 3-9 win-loss record, only above competition newcomer Surf Coast.
“We remain focused on continuing to build a strong, sustainable and successful football program, whilst fostering a culture that reflects the values of the Ocean Grove community,” the statement continued.
The Grubbers will chase their fourth win of the season when they take on Torquay at Steeline Ray Menzies Oval tomorrow.
