Andy Walsgott has stepped down as co-coach of the Belmont Lions after one of the most successful stints in charge in the club’s history.
Paired with Lions product Brent Vermeulen heading into the 2023 season, he helped oversee three finals appearances for the first time since the GDFNL returned to the single-division model in 1996.
The Lions reached the 2024 grand final, only to succumb to a Thomson team that had cut a swathe through the finals.
However, he and Vermeulen shared the Peter Burke Awards as the region’s Coach of the Year for their efforts in guiding the club to its first decider since winning its lone senior premiership in 2007
Walsgott joined the Belmont Lions as a playing co-coach but retired after suffering another concussion in mid-2010.
“The time, commitment and dedication Andy has shown throughout his tenure has been second to none,” the club said in a Facebook statement.
“Andy, along with Brent, have transformed our senior football program from a team striving for competitiveness into a respected and consistent finals contender.
“While the ultimate success of a senior premiership remained elusive, Andy has undoubtedly built strong foundations and leaves the club in a far stronger position than when he first arrived.
“Most importantly, Andy is an outstanding person who has earned the respect and admiration of everyone involved at our club and throughout the wider football community.
“His contribution extends far beyond wins and losses, and the positive impact he has had on our players, members and supporters will be felt for many years to come.”
It is understood that Vermeulen won’t continue in the role, leaving the Lions and Thomson as the clubs yet to finalise their coaching structure for 2027.
