Former South Barwon and Bannockburn player Jake Peters has been diagnosed with cancer.
A GoFundMe has been set up for the 30-year-old, whose partner Elli continues to play netball with the Swans.
“A cancer diagnosis, at 30. A brutal reminder of how fragile life is,” Peters said on the GoFundMe page.
“For now, it’s time to grab the bull by the horns. See you on the other side.”
As of Tuesday morning, close to $17,000 of the $18,000 target set by the page has been raised.
“No one should have to go through something like this alone,” organiser Meg Williams wrote.
“This unexpected diagnosis has meant Jake has had to take unpaid leave from work to focus on his treatment for the foreseeable future.
“Alongside the emotional and physical challenges of treatment, Jake and Elli are now facing a number of unexpected obstacles – from the unplanned costs that come with a cancer diagnosis, to navigating IVF treatments and taking the exciting step of becoming first home owners.”
Recruited to Bannockburn from Wimmera league outfit Warrack Eagles in 2015, Peters played 52 games across three seasons for the Tigers, including their 2017 grand final loss to Bell Post Hill, and represented the GDFNL on two occasions.
He returned to the Eagles for the 2018-19 season before linking up with South Barwon post-Covid.
At the Swans, Peters featured in the 2023 and 2024 grand final defeats by Leopold in his 46 senior games before departing at the end of 2024 for Mininera and District club Ararat Eagles.
“We are hoping by sharing this GoFundMe that the Swans community can rally around Jake and Elli to help alleviate some financial stress in this unknown time for them both,” a post on South Barwon’s Facebook page said
