St Mary’s is fearing the worst after talented young forward Lachie Peck suffered a knee injury during its annihilation of St Albans at Anthony Costa Oval this afternoon.
Peck, who is the Saints’ second leading goalkicker with 34 for the season, was leading for the ball during the second quarter of the 176-point victory when his knee buckled.
He instantly went to ground, spending a couple of minutes being attended to by medical staff before walking from the field.
A stability test carried out on Peck has St Mary’s confronting the reality of Peck being sidelined for the rest of 2024 and most of the 2025 season.
“It just didn’t look good from the get-go,” coach Glenn Keast told krockfootball.live.
“He was out on the lead, and there really wasn’t any contact… his knee just gave way.
“He was in a lot of pain and then was able to stand up and walk off.
“When you see that, you know how it works. The nerve endings die quickly, and therefore, there’s no pain after a short period of time.
“He’ll get scans and make sure that’s 100 per cent the case.”
Peck wasn’t the only Saint who failed to see out the 28.22 (190) to 2.2 (14) result.
Star winger Damian McMahon (knee) and debutant ruck Mackenzie Butcher (hamstring awareness) also ended the match on the bench.
“It’s more like a bursa-type thing where it just gets a bit sore; he landed on it awkwardly,” Keast said of McMahon.
“I’m pretty confident he’ll be right next week. If it was a big game, in terms of a final, I’m sure he would have pushed through.”
GFNL: FRIENDLY FIRE HOSPITALISES LIONS PAIR
After an even opening 15 minutes, where St Albans kicked its only two goals of the contest with the aid of a stiff northerly breeze, St Mary’s ran roughshod over the visitors.
Sam Bourke, Dion Johnstone, Harry McMahon, and Charlie Sprague each kicked four goals, while Joe Maishman and Kade Chalcraft produced dominant midfield displays.
Midfielder Zac Larkins, defender Joe Osborne, and ruck Nathan Cole battled hard for Supersaints.
