Leopold captain Marcus Thompson will be ineligible to win the Mathieson Medal after accepting a reprimand from the AFL Barwon Match Review Panel.

The star midfielder, who finished runner-up to Harry Benson in 2022 as GFNL senior football best-and-fairest, has been a consistent vote-getter throughout his career,

He entered an early guilty plea after a rough conduct charge against Colac’s Luke Cardinal in Saturday’s win at Memorial Park drew a one-match suspension.

Under AFL Barwon rules, accepting a reprimand makes a player ineligible for any best-and-fairest awards.

It was a fate that struck Drysdale’s Ben Fennell last year.

He polled the most votes in the Ash Medal, but a reprimand for striking early in the season saw Barwon Heads big man Luke Davis take home the award.

Thompson spent most of Saturday night in hospital, but scans have cleared the 162-game veteran of any serious damage.
