A report laid against star James Gow has taken some of the shine off St Joseph’s tenth-consecutive win.
The midfielder had his number taken and was yellow carded by umpire Daniel Wilson during the third quarter of Joeys’ 37-point win over Geelong West for an alleged incident with Giant Tex Mitchell.
At the time of speaking to krockfootball.live following the win at West Oval, St Joseph’s coach Ron Watt said no suspension offer had been made to the Mathieson Medal contender.
“I actually didn’t see it because I was leaving the bench for the first time – and only time – for the day,” Watt said.
“And I walked upstairs, and when I got upstairs, they said, ‘Gowy just got reported’.
“So, I honestly missed it.
“There’s been a report, but we haven’t seen the written report.”
In an at-times lacklustre affair, the class of St Joseph’s forwards Paddy DeGrandi and Joel Edwards shone through, kicking three goals apiece in the 12.14 (86) to 6.13 (49) victory.
A 5.4 to 0.2 second quarter proved crucial to the final result for the visitors.
“It was probably a tale of two halves,” Watt said. “We created plenty of pressure in the first half. I thought we were really hard and played good team football.
“And then the second half, I think we shut up shop a little bit and were looking just to get through the game.
“But, there were still some good things we took out of it.
“Some of our forward structure was a lot better in the second half, which might sound stupid because we didn’t score as well.
“But our structure looked a lot better.”
Geelong West coach Greg Mellor was left to rue his team’s execution going inside forward 50.
“That’s why we’re where we’re at on the ladder and what we need to work on to get into the next stage (finals),” he said.
“We’re not quite there yet.”
The Giants were without big man Tylar Watts for nearly three quarters after he was forced from the field following a tackle early in the second term.
“He’ll be assessed tomorrow; he passed his concussion test, but he was just feeling a bit dizzy, so we were quite cautious with him,” Mellor said.
In his first game since Round 4 after being squeezed out of Sydney’s VFL team, Phil Moimoi kicked two goals for Geelong West.
St Joseph’s will travel to Colac in a mouth-watering pre-bye match-up, while Geelong West hosts reigning grand finalists South Barwon.
