PODCAST – BEYOND THE BOUNDARY – NEVILLE WHITLEY & DARYL JARVIS
A senior executive with the country’s peak cycling body has been appointed as CEO of AFL Barwon.
Surf Coast-based Kate Patterson has emerged from a strong field of candidates to fill the newly created role as the peak body for football and netball in the region prepares to phase out the AFL Barwon brand and adjust its governance model.
Patterson has spent the past three-and-a-half years with AusCycling, since January 2023 as Executive General Manager – Commercial, and for six months prior as Head of Marketing and Brand.
The Melbourne University graduate also has an extensive background in netball, including with Netball Australia, playing a key role in the establishment of Super Netball a decade ago.
“I’m incredibly honoured to be appointed CEO of AFL Barwon and excited to lead an organisation that plays such an important role in creating community and connection through the power of sport,” Patterson said in a statement.
“Footy and netball are such a central part of the identity of our region. I’m thrilled by the opportunity to work alongside the Commission, staff, clubs, officials, players and all who contribute to making our competitions such a vital part of our community.
“I can’t wait to get started!”
Patterson has also worked locally with the Victorian Government’s Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions, and Surf Coast Shire.
She was a director of Spike Management Group in the early 2000s, which operated a Melbourne-based triathlon series before selling the business.
Patterson’s appointment follows that of former Geelong West Giants chair and current AFL Barwon commissioner, Sarah Naylor, as Head of Football.
“Kate brings an exceptional depth of experience in leading teams and transformative projects in sport,” chair Michelle Gerdtz, who will step down at February’s AGM, said.
“Her proven leadership in governance reform, strategic planning and stakeholder engagement makes her ideally placed to guide AFL Barwon through its next phase.
We are confident her values-driven, community-focused approach will strengthen our organisation and support the long-term sustainability of football and netball across the region.”
“Along with other recent changes to bolster our football and netball operations, including the new pending appointments of Geelong and Bellarine League Presidents onto the Commission and the recent appointment of Sarah Naylor as the Head of Football, we believe we are now well setup to deliver important sports reform, improved operations and governance and continue to strengthen the largest community football and netball operations in the state.”
Patterson will commence in the role on Monday, February 2.
