VETERAN forward Phoebe McWilliams says Geelong won’t shy away from using the middle of the ground to attack when it hosts Brisbane at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday.
The Cats managed just 13 inside 50s in last week’s season-opening 16-point loss to Fremantle, with skill errors and over possession hurting them.
“We’ve been working a lot on going through the corridor through the midfield and then launching into attack,” McWilliams said.
“We just missed that launching aspect to it, which has been a focus of this week.
“We’ll be looking to get it into the forwards to do what we do best in the forward line.”
Geelong showed it could be potent inside forward 50 against the Dockers, kicking 4.4 from just 13 entries.
“We had a look at the game with forward line coach Scott Thompson, and the one thing he did bring up was our efficiency inside 50,” McWilliams.
“That just shows that when we get it in, we are quite dangerous with it, and that’s something we’ll be hoping to keep up for the rest of the season.”
McWilliams says the Cats are looking forward to returning to GMHBA Stadium, with their last AFLW match in early March last year.
“The fact we’re playing at home, on a ground we’ve trained at for the last six months, that will definitely help,” she said.
“We’re so comfortable at GMHBA. This pre-season, we started training there from the start. Last year, we trained from a week or two before the first round.
“So, we’ve spent a lot of time there, we’re really used to the dimensions, and the girls will feel really comfortable out there.
“I think that will be a massive bonus.”
