Geelong fans unable to make the trip to Adelaide for the AFL clash with the Crows, will still get to see their beloved Cats in action this weekend.
The club’s VFL and VFLW teams will open their 2024 campaigns tomorrow (Saturday) at GMHBA Stadium as part of a doubleheader.
Elise Coventry’s women will host Carlton at 11:15am before Mark Corrigan’s men take on Werribee at 2:05pm.
The VFLW team will feature five AFLW-listed players: Brooke Plummer, Abbey McDonald, Mel Bragg, Gabbi Featherston and 2023 draftee Chantal Mason.
Former Geelong AFLW players Denby Taylor, Hannah Chalkley (nee’ Burchell), and Sam Gooden will also pull on the Hoops.
Poppy Schaap, Liv Stewart and Abby Favell will form a three-person leadership group that will share captaincy duties.
Meanwhile, 14 AFL-listed players have been named for the Cats’ meeting with last year’s runner-up.
VFL-listed first-gamers for the Cats include former Richmond rookie Kaelan Bradtke, former Vic Metro under-18 representative Darcy Edmends, who played 18 games for the GWS Giants in 2023, and Colac product Tobyn Murray.
The Geelong Falcons graduate has been named as 23rd player.
Geelong played Werribee with only one AFL-listed player – Brandan Parfitt – in a practice match on March 8, which the Tigers won by 19 points.
Former Cat Cooper Whyte is among the debutants for Werribee.
