GEELONG’S first pick in the 2021 National Draft will finally take the field this weekend.
Ruck Toby Conway, who had been hampered by a hip issue, will play limited minutes in the Cats’ VFL clash with the Northern Bullants at Preston City Oval.
Geelong selected the 205cm St Mary’s product with pick no.24, one selection before fellow Geelong Falcon Mitch Knevitt.
Fellow draftee Flynn Kroeger will join Conway in pulling on the Hoops for the first time against the Bullants.
Kroeger, who joined the Cats with pick no.48 from the Eastern Ranges, has also battled a hip concern.
“Toby and Flynn will play managed minutes in the VFL against the Northern Bullants this weekend,” Geelong’s head of medical and conditioning services Harry Taylor said.
“This is an exciting step forward for Toby and Flynn in their reconditioning programs, and it will be great to get a look at our new draftees.”
However, there is still no clarity around defender Jack Henry who has been sidelined since Easter Monday with a foot issue.
“Jack Henry is increasing his running program before being reintroduced to football, and we’re happy with the progress he’s making,” Taylor said.
Sam Menegola’s first appearance of the season also remains up in the air.
“Sam Menegola is gradually building into his football loading as he gets closer to returning to competition,” Taylor said.
Ruck Rhys Stanley will be tested later this week after suffering another ankle injury in the loss to St Kilda.
The Cats will assess veteran midfielder Shaun Higgins closer to Saturday’s clash with Port Adelaide after missing a fortnight with general soreness.
Defender Jed Bews is expected to take on the Power after he missed the Saints clash with a concussion.
Hawthorn recruit Jonathon Ceglar (broken foot) is increasing his running loads and will soon join the skills part of training.
Esava Ratugolea, who underwent ankle surgery last week, is set to follow a graduated return to train program.
