Geelong veteran Mitch Duncan has confirmed he will call time on his decorated AFL career at the end of the Cats’ 2025 campaign.

The dual premiership Cat, 34, broke the news to teammates at training on Friday morning, just as Geelong gears up for its 14th finals series with Duncan in the side.

Drafted from East Perth with pick 28 in the 2009 draft, Duncan has become one of the club’s most reliable and versatile performers, playing 305 games and booting 185 goals since debuting in Round 1, 2010.

He was the youngest member of the 2011 premiership side, making an impact as the substitute with 10 disposals and a goal in the grand final win over Collingwood. Over a decade later, he starred again in the Cats’ 2022 triumph, racking up 27 disposals, 13 marks and a goal against Sydney.

A life member of both Geelong and the AFL, Duncan has also been a consistent performer across home-and-away seasons, finishing top-10 in the Carji Greeves Medal seven times, including a runner-up finish in 2017.

“After 16 years at AFL level, I feel now is the right time to hang up the boots,” Duncan said.
“I’m grateful to have been part of this club, filled with so many great people. But for now, my focus is on giving everything I can over the next month to help the Cats win another premiership.”

Geelong’s football boss Andrew Mackie — who played alongside Duncan for eight seasons — hailed the veteran’s impact.

“Mitch has been outstanding over 16 years. His skill, IQ and flexibility have always put the team first, and he’s had just as much influence off the field, helping develop the next generation of Cats.”
