Menegola back after surgery

GEELONG midfielder Sam Menegola will play his first game in 2022 on Saturday after being named in the Cats’ VFL team to play Collingwood.

After undergoing off-season knee surgery, the running machine was sidelined but has made quicker than expected progress in his recovery.

“The initial prognosis that I was provided in November, after the surgery, was that he wouldn’t play until, potentially, late May,” AFL coach Chris Scott said earlier this week.

“And, here we are, it’s not even April, and he’s playing.

“It’s one of those things (where) you need to have a bit of luck with it, which I think he’s had.

“But, the preparation’s got to be there to meet that opportunity, and he’s done that really well.”

Menegola will be part of a strong Geelong lineup, with up to 14 AFL listed players set to take on the Magpies.

Luke Dahlhaus, Zach Guthrie, Mark O’Connor and Mitch Knevitt have been named emergencies for the AFL clash between the two clubs on Saturday night.

One of that quartet will be Geelong’s medical sub and won’t play VFL.
