Rolled ankle for Hawkins

A ROLLED ankle suffered by Tom Hawkins has added a tinge of drama to Geelong’s final training session before Christmas.

The veteran key forward stood on teammate Mark Blicavs’ foot late in the session at Deakin Unversity’s Elite Sports Precinct this morning and was treated by physios.

“He’s alright. I just said “get over it, mate. Enjoy your Chrissy break,” Blicavs said.

“He just stood on my foot in those one-on-one contests.  Just a roll … he’ll be fine.

“When he first hit the deck, I wasn’t sure.

“You’re always worried, (and) you make sure your teammates OK.”

Today’s session ended a six-week block for Geelong ahead of a three-week break over Christmas and New Year.

As well as the session at Deakin, the Cats took part in a 15 minute run behind closed doors at GMHBA Stadium, with a number of teammates catching the former star steeplechaser’s eye.

“Mark O’Connor is always really fit, Gryan Miers likes to put himself through some pain – he calls himself ‘Kobe’ (Bryant, US basketball great), actually,” Blicavs said.

“I knew he was going to go out hard. He loves to do that and he didn’t die too much, which was good.

“Probably the other one was Paddy (Dangerfield). He’s lost a couple of kgs and he’s running really well.”
