Geelong’s waterfront bollards have been attacked by vandals, with disgusting messages and pictures seen sprayed all over many of the iconic sculptures.
Spray painted blue tags were seen on Friday morning on the bollards, while other sculptures and the King Edward VII statue on the corner of Brougham and Moorabool St was also tagged.
Graffiti was seen as far up as the Malop St intersection on Moorabool St, all the way to the Giant Sky Wheel on Eastern Beach.
Bollards attacked include lifeguards by the beach volleyball nets and the volunteer rifle band next to the carousel.
Executive Director of City Infrastructure at the City of Greater Geelong, James Striton said it may take a long time to clean up all the damage.
“It’s very disappointing to see this happen,” he said.
“Where possible, the graffiti is being removed today.
“Unfortunately, vandalised public art such as the bollards may take a little time to repair.
“We will work with a professional conservator to ensure the art itself is not damaged during the removal process, and some of the bollards may need repainting.”
Tags included derogatory and racist terms, inappropriate imagery and intials.
The City of Greater Geelong and police have been contacted.
