A Wyndham man has been arrested in Newcomb, over an alleged plot to import methamphetamine into Australia.
Around 80kg of the drug were allegedly hidden in steel boxes and addressed to a Victorian business.
Australian Border Force seized the consignment when it arrived in Australia in October, 2023, following information from US authorities.
They removed the drugs and delivered the boxes to a Moorabbin address, alleging a Werribee man was seen at a nearby location and arrested.
He was released pending further inquiries, but was arrested this week in Geelong following a Victoria Police review which indicated he also allegedly trafficked more drugs.
The man has since been charged with offences including importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, trafficking a drug of dependence and deal with proceeds of crime.
He faced a Melbourne court on Thursday and has been remanded to reappear in October.
Superintendent David Cowan from Victoria Police said the use of methamphetamine in Australia was high.
“The prevalence of these illicit substances within our society and the impact they have on human behaviour translates into road trauma, family violence, homicides, shootings and other violent offending intrinsically linked to the illicit drug trade,” he said.
“The damage caused by the use of methylamphetamine ripples throughout the community, and it does not just affect those using the drug.
“There have been many lives forever changed and ruined simply by their sheer misfortune of encountering someone who chose to take methylamphetamine.”
