Torquay has suffered a major blow to its Bellarine premiership hopes with Travis Boak to miss the rest of the season.
Scans on a knee injury suffered in Saturday’s win over Anglesea have confirmed a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.
“The injury occurred during the first half when Boaky was tackled and, in typical Boaky fashion, fought to break free. Unfortunately, his knee became caught in an awkward position, resulting in the injury,” coach Dom Gleeson said in an email to club members.
“While we’re incredibly disappointed that we won’t have him out on the field for the remainder of the year, his contribution to this group is far from finished.”
“Selfishly, as coaches, we’ll now get the benefit of his outstanding football IQ from the sidelines. Boaky is an important leader within our group, and he will continue to play an integral role over the next six weeks as we attack the remainder of the season.
“Trav will meet with his specialist this week to determine the best plan moving forward and what his recovery looks like from here.
“Knowing Trav, though, something tells me this won’t be the last time we see him pull on the number 5.”
A Torquay junior, Boak was drafted by Port Adelaide in 2006 from the Geelong Falcons, where he played a club-record 387 games.
Boak, who turned 38 at the start of August, honoured a promise to his mum, Chicki, that he would return to Torquay post-AFL to wear the number of his late father, Roger.
He’s made eight appearances for the Tigers this year.
