Sam Schaller’s four-year stint as coach of Barwon Heads has ended after the club announced “a full reset” of its coaching structure following a review of the club’s football program.
Schaller shared the role for two years with Mitch Herbison, went solo in 2025, before Damian McMahon, who last month announced he was returning to GFNL club St Mary’s, stepped up as co-coach this year.
“As part of this process, all coaching positions within the football program will be opened through an expression of interest process to ensure the club is best positioned for future success both on and off the field,” president Russell Hyland said in a statement.
“This decision follows extensive discussion, consideration of feedback received from across the football program, and a thorough assessment of the direction required to continue building a strong and sustainable future for the club.
“The club wishes to acknowledge and sincerely thank senior coach Sam Schaller for his outstanding contribution to Barwon Heads Football Netball Club. Sam’s commitment, leadership and service to the club extends well beyond his time as Senior Coach and reflects a lifetime of dedication to the Seagulls.”
“The football department and committee recognise the significant work undertaken by Sam and his coaching staff, and the positive impact they have had on the development of players and the broader football program.
“We remain incredibly grateful for everything they have contributed.”
After winning the 2022 premiership under Daniel Donati in his lone season in charge, the Seagulls reached the following year’s preliminary final.
They failed to make the finals in 2024 and 2025, before returning to the top five this year after making the most of a front-ended home fixture.
However, their stay was short-lived, losing to Newcomb in the elimination final.

“While change can be difficult, the football department firmly believes this process is being undertaken in the best interests of the club and its long-term future.
