Scott Frangos has labelled his departure from the senior coaching role at GDFNL club Geelong West as “probably the right decision for the club to go forward”.
Frangos and the Giants agreed yesterday to bring his nearly two-and-a-half-year tenure to an end after starting the new season without a win through the opening five rounds.
“You can’t really start 0-5 and think everything’s peachy all the time,” Frangos told K rock Football.
“It’s hard because there were some stages that we played some really good footy in those games, but the bad was just outweighing the good at the moment.
“Obviously, you want to sort of see years out
“It’s a good young group; it’s a lot younger than years past.
“But… you can’t start 0-5 and not expect to get the shoulder at some stage. But it doesn’t make it any easier.”
West said Frangos had been “balancing the demands of his professional career and living in Melbourne, alongside the commitment of travelling for training and match days” for an extensive period.
“What Scott has given this club is remarkable when you consider what he was managing off the field,” Giants GDFNL president Chris Wilkie said.
“Travelling from Melbourne week in, week out for training and games takes real dedication, and we never took that for granted.
“We thank him sincerely for his commitment to the Giants. He is a genuine club legend.”
Frangos, who played more than 250 games of open-age football with the GFNL Giants and its forerunner, Geelong West-St Peter’s, hasn’t ruled out playing on.
However, he won’t take the field against Inverleigh this week.
“West still want me to play,” he said. “I’ll just weigh that up over the next week.
“I’m probably leaning towards playing. 295 games for Geelong West, across GFL and GD, so it’d be nice to get to that 300 mark.”
Former coach Andrew Clark has been reported as filling the role on an interim basis.
However, the club’s hierarchy says nothing has been confirmed.
EARLIER
GDFNL club Geelong West and coach Scott Frangos have agreed to end his tenure in charge at Scaada Stadium.
K rock Football understands the decision was made on Monday night.
The Giants are the only club yet to taste victory in the GDFNL in 2026, with losses to the previously winless Corio and Thomson in the past fortnight.
A stalwart of more than 250 games with Geelong West-St Peter’s and Geelong West at GFNL level, Frangos joined the GDFNL Giants as a player in 2023.
He replaced Mitch Wight heading into the following year.
However, in 41 games in charge, the Giants have only tasted victory on seven occasions.
A statement is expected from Geelong West later today.
