Geelong West has signed former Newcomb and Queenscliff mentor Rory Nicol as its new coach as it commences the tough climb off the bottom of the GDFNL ladder following a winless season.
The Giants – who also spoke with new Bannockburn coach Kyle Pinto – have confirmed to K rock Football that Nicol has put pen to paper on a two-year contract with an option for a third year.
Nicol, who also served as an assistant coach at GFNL club St Albans and VFL outfit Werribee, is no stranger to taking on clubs at their lowest ebb, with Newcomb having not won a match in the two years before his 2016 appointment.
By the time he departed Newcomb during the COVID-cancelled 2020 season, the Power had won back the respect of the competition, laying the foundation for their first finals appearance since 2007 this year.
Nicol led Queenscliff in 2022 and 2023, stepping down after Round 15 of his second season at the Couta Bowl.
He fills the role at Geelong West left vacant by Scott Frangos’ early-season departure.
Former coach Andrew Clark was caretaker coach for the remainder of 2026 but chose not to apply for the position.
