JOEL Bennett will get the chance to play some competitive football in 2020 after signing with NTFL club Palmerston.

The Corio co-coach will join former Geelong West teammate Chris Moreland in heading north later this year after being contacted by fellow former Giant Will Baird, who is an assistant coach at Palmerston.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” Bennett said.

“It will be good to get up there and hopefully spend a few weeks up there at a time and learn about the culture and the way they go about their footy.

“I think it will be a great experience.”

With Corio putting a hold on training following the cancellation of the GDFL season, Bennett has tapped into his resources to ensure he hits the ground running with Palmerston.

“I’ve taken a couple of weeks off since we were told no footy’s going to go ahead,” he said.

“We’ve probably got about three months before the NTFL season kicks off, so I’ll start ramping it up in the next couple of weeks.

“I can draw back on all my old Falcons, Geelong (VFL) and Werribee programs to see what we did in the lead-up to pre-season, some of the pre-season sessions, and the over-Christmas sessions.

“I’ll lean on those programs a fair bit.”

Bennett said he’s looking forward to again playing with Moreland, who is now coaching Western Region club Wyndhamvale.

“He’s a fantastic player,” Bennett said. “He’s taught me a few things over the journey about footy.”
