After being part of an incident that will see Adelaide veteran Taylor Walker face the AFL Tribunal later today (Monday), emerging Geelong defender Connor O’Sullivan has welcomed the crackdown on players being pushed into contests.
Walker was handed a one-week suspension after being cited by the Match Review Officer for shoving the young Cat into a one-on-one involving Crows skipper Jordan Dawson and Geelong defender Mark O’Connor during the third quarter of last Thursday’s match at Adelaide Oval.
“There is times where you feel like people do it, and because they’re not in a marking contest, they get away with it,” O’Sullivan said.
“But as a whole, if we can get it out of the game, then that’s great.
” But I don’t think the last few weeks have necessarily been a reflection of that. I think the AFL is doing a pretty good job as it is on that.”
O’Sullivan revealed that Walker apologised for the push but wouldn’t be drawn on whether it warranted a suspension.
“Across the course of the year, there’s so many times where players get a week that I don’t understand, and then there’s players that don’t get a week that I also don’t understand,” he said.
“I’m just going to leave that up to the tribunal to decide… and the best part was that everyone got up and continued with the game.
“I hit Dawson with the shoulder pretty hard. I was just glad to see us both up. And we had a bit of a laugh about it when he was on the mark.”
