GEELONG midfielder Cam Guthrie has spoken of his drive to add ‘premiership player’ to his résumé after recently being announced as a life member of the club.
The 29-year-old midfielder watched on from the stands as a first-year player when Geelong claimed its most recent premiership in 2011.
Since, the Cats have lost the 2020 decider to Richmond and four preliminary finals, of which Guthrie has been part of three.
“The main driving factor in why I still put so much effort into my career (is) being able to lift the premiership cup and share that with some teammates I’ve played a lot of footy with, (and) my brother now,” he said.
“(I’m) super motivated to attack this year and give it our best shot.”

Since the St Kilda loss in Round 9, Guthrie was a key in the Cats’ wins over Adelaide, Port Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs.
He averaged 31 disposals across those three matches, including 38 against the Power in Round 11.
“Early in the season, I had a few little niggles and stuff like that,” Guthrie said.
“But the body’s feeling really good, and we’ve had a nice freshen up after the bye.
“And I imagine my body will keep getting better, and we’re in a really good place to attack the second half of the season.
“We’ve got a couple of injuries, but we’ve got a couple coming back soon.
“We’re really excited about what the second half of the season might hold.”
Guthrie is confident Geelong’s style will stack up against the AFL’s best.
That includes Melbourne, which the Cats face in the next month.
The Demons have dropped their past three matches, including on Monday against Collingwood.
However, Guthrie knows Melbourne will still be there come late September.
“I think it was (Demons coach) Simon Goodwin in his press conference (on Monday) saying that there are ebbs and flows in any competition, and I think they are just going through that at the moment, and they will be firing later in the season as we expect them to be,” he said.
